dogs of siem reap
For the first month of my stay here in Siem Reap, Cambodia, I am in a hotel on a fairly quiet street. And it didn't take me very long before I noticed a slightly older and slightly mangy dog roaming around nearby. The dog seems to stick to an area around a building under construction and it spends a large part of the day trotting back and forth within a block or two radius. I initially assumed it was female, as I didn't see giant balls knocking about while it ran around. But today I saw it peeing on every single car on the street and - welp - it is a he who I guess just happened to get snipped. So, despite his overall unkempt appearance, this dog appears to have someone looking after it in some capacity somewhere nearby. Anyways, the dog caught my attention because he is a real character. One morning, I saw him trot over to the middle of the street and rather nonchalantly lie down, forcing every vehicle to drive around him. Another morning, I saw him sitting on a bench continuously yapping and howling. Basically just having a random conversation with himself. And in the afternoons, I always see him trotting up and down the street, with an extremely determined look on his face, peeing on every single car as if he was giving out parking tickets. Basically, this dog is the self-appointed ruler of this one to two block radius and he takes his job very seriously.
